This museum quality piece is a very fine, original Imperial Rome Antoninianus of Emperor Philip I, coined in Rome between 244-247 A.D.
Obverse: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, radiate and draped bust right.
Reverse: Emperor left on prancing horse.
Imperator Caesar Marcus Julius Philippus Augustus (known as ”Philip I”) reigned February 244 A.D. – September 249 A.D. Born: c. 204 A.D. at Philippopolis, Arabia Petraea—Died: September 249 A.D. (aged 45) at Verona, Italia. His principal achievements were negotiate peace with the Persian Sassanid Empire and returned to Rome to be confirmed by the senate. During his reign, the city of Rome celebrated its millennium.
