First introduced with significant recognition in 2019, Michter's US1 Sour Mash Whiskey marked a historic moment by being named "Whisky Of The Year" by The Whisky Exchange. This distinction made it the first American-made whiskey to ever receive such an honor. Crafted from a unique grain selection that defies traditional categorization as neither a rye nor a bourbon, Michter's US1 Sour Mash is renowned for its distinct taste. The term "Sour Mash" derives from a specific whiskey-making process that involves using a portion of previously fermented mash to start the fermentation of the new mash, akin to the method used in sourdough bread production. This process contributes to the whiskey's distinctive flavor profile.

Following a hiatus after its disappearance in 1989, Michter's Original Sour Mash Whiskey was reintroduced in 2012 as part of the US1 line, maintaining the original's flavor and character. Its return was met with enthusiasm from whiskey aficionados, quickly establishing it as a sought-after selection.
