Please Note: If the wood is too hard for installation, drill a hole a little smaller than the spike, then hammer it in firmly making sure there is no movement.

How do you get the apple in there? Is there anything else you can put in it instead of an apple?

The Bird Feeder has a spike in the middle of the opening to hold a variety of fruits in place. Fat balls may also be a good option.

How effective it is against squirrels?

Unfortunately, squirrels are really creative and will probably find a way to consume bits of the fruit no matter what.
