1923 $ 1 Silver Certificate Changeover Pair front # 392 - 393

Being offered today is a very very rare REVERSE CHANGEOVER PAIR OF 1923 SERIES $ 1.00 Silver Certificates. Both notes are also ERROR NOTES. Some of the inking is lighter on the serial numbers and the serial numbers are not lined up correctly.

THE FIRST NOTE has the signatures of Woods and White. THE SECOND NOTE has the signatures of Speelman and White. In the case of these two 1923 series $ 1 Silver Certificates, it is the signatures that make them a reverse changeover pair.

Reverse Changeover Pairs are an interesting phenomenon that occurred during the early years of printing currency. Changeover pairs are consecutive notes that transition to a different series.

The second signature series for serial number A 79151392 D was printed before the first signature series combination for serial number A 79151393 D

This process occurred because the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) workers kept using old plates due to high engraving costs. Some signatures were already engraved into the plates even long after a signer had left their office, or the plates would be used until they were worn out or were retired.

The first printing is the back of the note. The second printing is the front of the note. All that was left was the third printing which contains the serial numbers. The stack of partially completed notes would be numbered in sequence. In this case the second note has the lower serial number, which makes these notes a “REVERSE CHANGEOVER PAIR”

The paper the notes were printed on have beautiful red and blue fibers throughout. This was to protect the notes from being counterfeited. The big blue poker chip on the left side of the note symbolizing the Silver Certificate designation is bright and bold.

The margins are centered very well, and the ink just pops off the notes.  The vibrant colors and well-preserved paper add to the visual eye appeal. The notes show no sign of wear on the corners or the sides.  All of the corners and edges of the note are crisp and clean.  There are no pinholes, rips, stains, or tears.
