French oaked for layers of flavor, Maker's 46® is the taste vision of Bill Samuels, Jr. Creating his signature bourbon requires first-of-its-kind finishing that begins with fully matured cask strength Maker’s Mark®. Ten seared French oak staves are fitted into the barrel before the whisky is finished to maturity under ideal conditions in our limestone cellar. The result is an easy-to-sip bourbon with notes of caramel, vanilla and baking spice that greet the palate in layers.
Capturing the 46 taste vision took some doing. But all you need to figure out is your favorite way to enjoy Bill, Jr.’s recipe. Maker’s 46 Cask Strength is the barrel proof version of the standard Maker’s 46. Maker’s 46 starts off as standard Maker’s Mark, which is a wheated bourbon made in batches of less than 1,000 gallons. Heavily seared French oak staves are placed in just-emptied standard Maker's Mark barrels, which are then refilled and returned to the warehouses to finish aging for an undisclosed amount of time (estimated to be 2-3 additional months). The Maker’s 46 Cask Strength version comes in between 108-114 proof.
Tasting Notes

At Maker's Mark, the wood-finishing series was created to explore new, unique expressions of our signature whisky. Beginning as fully matured Maker's Mark at cask strength, Private Selection is created by adding 10 custom wood finishing staves to each barrel. It's then aged in their limestone cellar to extract a unique, flavorful taste profile. Participants in this special barrel program get their say in the selection of these wooden staves. The finishing staves can be any combination of five flavor profiles chosen especially for this program. With 1,001 possible stave combinations, each expression of Private Selection has a customized finish and taste profile that is unique, yet undeniably Maker's®.
